Bible Memorization

The most important thing a school can do is have students memorize scripture.  There are many reasons.  One is Hosea 4:6, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.”

There is a warning here about the consequences of ignoring the Ten Commandments.  The flip side is the promises of success and prosperity in Joshua 1:8 and Psalm 1:1-2 when God’s law is remembered and mediated upon.

This nation, its schools and its homes are experiencing a lot of trouble that could be avoided. How?  By having a greater respect for just the ten commandments of God. Once prayer, Bible reading, and the Ten Commandments were removed from the nation’s schools, America began to see the rapid rise of troubling trends among its youth.

Every day in America:

  • 1,439 teens will attempt suicide.
  • 2,795 teenage girls will become pregnant.
  • 15,006 teens will use drugs for the first time.
  • 3,506 teens will run away.
  • 2 teens will be murdered.

What is the most important book in the world? Did you answer, “the Bible?” Do you believe that it is? If so, you must agree that it is the most important book for a school to teach. In fact, the most important thing a school can do is have students memorize scripture. Here’s why:

  1. The Word of God is the power of God unto salvation. (Rom. 1:16; 10:17). The more scripture a student knows the more likely he is to come to faith;
  2. The more scripture a person knows the more useful he will be to God. The Word of God is the sword the Holy Spirit uses in the good fight of faith (Eph. 6:17; 1Tim. 6:12). When you know the Bible, God can use you to speak blessings into the lives of others. Pro 25:25 says “As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.”
  3. Memorizing God’s Word is valuable in keeping us from destroying our lives. “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Ps. 119:11; Hosea 4:6
  4. God’s Word is totally sufficient for all of our needs. We don’t need anything else. In 2 Timothy 3:16-17 it reads “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” We Christians can be totally secure in the Lord by studying the Bible because it is God’s plan for our life.
BY THE TIME A STUDENT FINISHES THE SEVENTH GRADE, AT CCA, HE/SHE WILL HAVE MEMORIZED 600 VERSES OF SCRIPTURE!

Let’s be honest.  Despite the best of intentions, students aren’t memorizing scriptures at home or at church. Luther was right…If the Scriptures aren’t engraved on the hearts of students at school they seldom, if ever will be. Beginning with four year olds we have students memorize the Ten Commandments and as long as they remain at CCA they are required to recite them again each year.

ADDITIONAL MEMORIZATION: In G8-12 there will be additional verses to memorize each year connected to that years’ Bible curriculum.  In addition, all G7-12 students must be able to do the following: name all the books of the Bible in order; define and name four patriarchs; name the major prophets; name the 12 Apostles; name several of the priests; explain who Satan is; define the Gospel; name the Trinity; explain creation; explain Who God is; and define the following theological terms: anti-Christ, great tribulation, rapture, sanctification, justification,  grace, biblical faith, biblical regeneration, second advent, ascension, resurrection, substitutionary death, sinless life, hypostatic union, holiness, son of God, son of man, virgin birth, creator, deity, propositional, perspicuity, canonicity, verbal inspiration, infallibility, Biblical repentance.

BIBLICAL WORLDVIEW: In addition to all the above, grades 9-12 review and discuss two biblical worldview questions each week all year long.  This comprehensive Bible training is why year after year CCA students rank at or near the top among all Christian schools in the nation on Bible knowledge as measured by the PEERS, a test administered by the Nehemiah Institute on biblical worldview.

The value of CCA’s Bible memorization and instruction cannot be overstated. Here are some quotes that SUPPORT that claim:

“The Bible has been the Magna Carta of the poor and oppressed. The human race is not in a position to dispense with it.”
Thomas Huxley (1825-1895)

“It is impossible to enslave mentally or socially a Bible-reading people. The principles of the Bible are the groundwork of human freedom.” –Horace Greeley (1811-1872)

“The whole hope of human progress is suspended on the ever-growing influence of the Bible.”
-U.S. Secretary of State, William H. Seward (1801-1872)

“That book sir, is the rock on which this republic rests.”
-U.S. President Andrew Jackson (1767-1845)

“The Bible is worth all other books which have ever been printed.”
Patrick Henry (1736-1799)

In the Bible we are given the “path” to true “spirituality” which will bring salvation.  It’s a path that is given to us from the CREATOR of the universe.  That “path” is the same for every person.  Let’s open God’s Word and see what it says.
